Mental Illness: What Hath Been Wrought
During the early 1970’s in California Ronald Reagan decided to deinstitutionalize persons with mental illnesses. With legislative support that’s what happened, and it was supposed to be somehow replaced with some kind of community care system and psychotropic drugs that somehow never fully materialized. Over the years many commentators and…

Kelly Higashi, chief of the Sex Offense and Domestic Violence Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, cites two cases of elder abuse: In 2008 Darryl Gaynor, 38, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for sexually assaulting his 72-year-old aunt in 2007. In 2008, Martin “Tony” Brown, 48, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the 2006 murder of his 89-year-old grandfather.

Moral Panics 2.0
A binge drinking death at an “apéros Facebook”, that is, a drinking event organized via Facebook, where thousands of people congregate, and out of the woodworks come the moral entrepreneurs, sounding the alarm as to what is happening to our kids these days and what should be done about these apéros géants. There is nothing new to such a script, it was the same invoked against rave parties back in the 1990s.

Pedophile Island
For those who need more political whackos in your day than Rand Paul, consider California GOP gubernatorial candidate Douglas Hughes. His main campaign promise is to exile sexual offenders to Santa Rosa Island – to be renamed Pedophile Island – where within their „island society“ they will farm, ranch, build housing, choose police, firemen, fish and game agents, write their own Constitution, and „live out their existence… away from our precious children“ to the end of their sorry days.

Portrait in DNA: Can forensic analysis yield police-style sketches of suspects?
Male, short and stout, with dark skin, brown eyes, shovel-shaped teeth, type A+ blood and coarse, dark brown hair giving way to pattern baldness. He would have a high tolerance for alcohol and a higher-than-average risk of nicotine dependence?fortunately, he lived thousands of years before humans discovered smoking. The description of a Stone Age Greenland resident published in February paints an extraordinary portrait of a man who vanished more than 4,000 years ago, drawn almost solely from his DNA remains.
