Promoting Racial Profiling
A New York lawmaker’s plan to introduce legislation this month legitimizing racial profiling in an attempt to prevent terrorist attacks is more than just offensive. It’s counter-productive and dangerous, too. (change.org – Criminal Justice, 02.01.2010)
PA May Ease Mandatory Sentences To Cope With Prison Overflow
Faced with a serious overpopulation of Pennsylvania prisons and the need to ship inmates to other states, legislators may consider easing some harsh sentencing guidelines so that nonviolent offenders aren’t automatically sent to prison for lengthy terms, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gzette. State Rep. Tom Caltagirone, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said judges should be given more latitude in deciding on sentences for minor offenses — leeway they don’t have now due to mandatory sentencing laws approved 10 or 20 years ago in the heyday of “lock ‘em up, throw away the key” thinking. How National Counterterrorism Center Analyzes Data 24/7
Mike Leiter, director of the federal National Counterterrorism Center in McLean, Va., tells National Public Radio that it’s impossible to guarantee security — no matter how much safer the U.S. has become. At the center, a couple dozen or so analysts keep an eye on three or four computer screens each. Leiter says, “We have secure video teleconferences at 1 a.m. every night where people sit down — ‘What do you see? What have you seen over the past eight hours?’ — This never stops.” (The Crime Report, 01.01.2010)

New criminal code spells freedom for over 1,500 prisoners
New Year’s Day will be a real red letter day for many prisoners in the Czech Republic. Keeping Our Pants On in a Time of Terror
Ever since Richard Reid attempted to detonate his sneakers with pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) on an American Airlines flight in December 2001, airport travelers in the United States have had to remove their shoes while going through security. Now that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has tried to blow-up a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas Day with PETN sowed into his underwear, I worry that authorities will soon ask us to undress and put our undies on the conveyor belt. Let it not be so. (change.org – Criminal Justice, 30.12.2009)

Analyze This: The Mind of the Underpants Bomber
Here’s a rare chance to step inside a would-be terrorist’s head. From 2005 to 2007, underpants bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab appears to have posted 310 times to the Islamic Forum on Gawaher.com, under the handle “Farouk1986.” Now, all of Farouk1986’s posts have been assembled into a single file, thanks to Evan Kohlmann, the NEFA Foundation’s indefatigable jihadism researcher. I’d be curious to see what you guys find out about the man who tried to take down Northwest Airlines flight # 253.

Why are violent crime rates falling?
AS YOU HAVE no doubt heard, the first 10 years of the 21st century were dreadful — a lost decade of terrorism, war and economic stagnation. There is some truth to that portrayal. But in one significant respect, the awful Aughties were practically a golden age. We refer to the continued progress the United States is making against homicide and other violent crime.
